Technical and Applied Studies

In 2024 the Technology Faculty will continue to offer a range of subjects and opportunities that will allow students to develop basic skills before progressing to specialised areas of their choice which may lead to employment opportunities as they progress to post schooling options.

We have been fortunate to retain the nucleus of our established and well-credentialed staff and it is their expertise and experience that will provide guidance for our students in the areas of Childcare, Food Technology, Textiles, VET (Vocational Education and Training) Hospitality, Construction & Metals, Industrial Technology Timber, Metal & Engineering.

Minor staff changes have occurred with Miss Stacie Ostle continuing parental leave, Mr Brian Means returns from a well-earned 12-month break and will be filling Miss Ostle's shoes three days a week. While Mrs Ashley Tsakissiris and Miss Taylah Weiss will continue to provide valuable support to the faculty.

The TAS Faculty achieved solid results in the 2023 HSC. Congratulations go to those students who achieved personal bests or reached individual goals. Recognition and thanks also go to the faculty staff members who put in extra hours to guide the students with study, examination preparation, holiday workshops, stress relief techniques or simply being there for the students when they needed a chat.

Due to the practical nature of our lessons, specific strict dress rules apply to meet WHS requirements. Students will have been advised by their classroom teachers of these requirements as the school year begins and now that safety tests are completed. Assessment schedules have been provided to each student, with many practical assessment tasks being completed in class throughout the year.  With this early notice, students will have an opportunity to plan and create a balance between schoolwork, sporting events and possible casual employment whilst maintaining a social life with family and friends.

As we venture further into the school year, we are thrilled to see our students across various years levels engaged in hands-on projects. Their enthusiasm and creativity are commendable and we are excited to share some highlights from their recent endeavours.

In Year 8 Technology Mandatory, students have hit the ground running by delving into a variety of exciting projects. They are currently busy designing and constructing Desk Tidies, showcasing their skills in organization, design and construction. Additionally, they are exploring the culinary arts by preparing and cooking delicious curry chicken dishes, combining technical skills with culinary creativity. We are impressed by the students' enthusiasm and willingness to explore new areas of technology.

In Year 9 Industrial Technology, students have been honing their woodworking skills through practical projects. Using plunge routers, they are crafting intricate legs for their folding stools, demonstrating precision and attention to detail in their craftsmanship. This hands-on experience not only enhances their technical abilities but also fosters a deep appreciation for the art of woodworking.

Meanwhile, our Year 9 Food Technology class is embracing project-based learning by undertaking the task of preparing and baking scrumptious scones. This practical and delicious project allows students to engage in culinary techniques, explore taste and texture combinations and develop essential cooking skills. The aromatic scents wafting from the Food Tech classroom are a testament to the students' culinary creativity and expertise.

In Year 11 Industrial Technology Timber, students are busy refining their woodworking skills and mastering intricate joinery techniques. Through the development of their photo frames, students are practicing various joints such as domino, corner bridle, mortise and tenon, and dovetail joints. This project not only challenges students to demonstrate precision and craftsmanship but also encourages them to explore innovative design elements within their woodworking creations.

Year 11 VET Hospitality under the guidance of Miss Linda Freeman and Miss Sarah Bendall will be organising and running the senior café again in 2024. The café will be open for seniors and staff at recess Monday and Tuesday and Friday mornings serving a range of offerings including coffee, muffins and bacon and egg rolls. The café offers students a unique industry style environment to achieve required course outcomes which are transferable into post school opportunities.

As we progress through the school year, we look forward to witnessing the continued growth and innovation of our students across all technology disciplines. The Technology Department is here to support, inspire and guide students as they navigate exciting projects and explore the boundless possibilities of technology education.

Here's to a successful and inspiring year ahead for all our talented students!
