The benefits of VET work placement.

Students in stage 6 who are enrolled in a Vocational Education and Training courses (VET Course) are required to complete mandatory work placement hours. Students enrolled in Construction pathways, Primary Industries, Retail and Hospitality are required to complete 70 hours of workplace learning, while students enrolled in Manufacturing and Engineering are required to complete 35 hours.

Work Placement allows students to practice and enhance the specific industry skills they have learned in their course work. Students also work towards gaining specific industry competencies. Work placement is the perfect opportunity for students to connect with local industry and showcase their entry level skills and aspirations for gaining employment, especially apprenticeships.

Selected year 11 students had the opportunity to participate in work placement in weeks 3 and 4 of this term.

Thomas Callan was placed at Cessnock Toyota as part of the work placement requirements for VET Manufacturing and Engineering. Upon completion of the 35 hours Thomas was offered an automotive apprenticeship and signed out of school immediately to take up this amazing opportunity. The Mount View High VET team wishes to congratulate Thomas on this achievement and encourage all VET students to engage in their work placement opportunities.

The benefits of Year 10 Work Experience

Work experience provides students in year 10 a general introduction to the “world of work”. Students are able to observe a variety of work, in a field of their choice, and undertake supervised tasks appropriate to their skill level. Work experience helps students to:

-        Test their job and career choices

-        Engage with the wider community

-        Learn what is required from a worker in the workplace

-        Build general work skills like good communication, teamwork and critical thinking

-        Develop specific industry skills

-        Gain confidence, maturity and self-management skills

-        Make informed decisions when planning their transition through school and onto further education, training and work

-        Demonstrate reliability, motivation, work ethic and good personal presentation

Students and employers often use the year 10 work experience program as a trial for further employment or apprenticeship opportunities.

At the beginning of the school year Danny Hardes was very proactive in seeking work experience opportunities. Danny independently completed all mandatory work ready requirements and actively sought a suitable employer. He completed a 2 week block of work experience at Kentan Machinery at Hexham. Danny completed his work experience just prior to Kentan releasing their 2023 apprenticeship intake. Danny went on to complete the recruitment application process for Kentan and has recently found out that he has been successful in gaining a 2023 apprenticeship as a Plant Mechanic.  Danny starts his apprenticeship on 5th December. Congratulations Danny!

If you are in year 10 and interested in participating in a work experience program please contact Ms Knipe or Mrs Ambrum in the Futures Centre.
