Deputy Principal - Year 8 & 12

Year 12 - An end of an era

Firstly, congratulations to all year 12 students on successfully completing their HSC and 13 years of schooling. Secondally, congratulations to the parents, carers and community members  that have supported these young people from their first day of school, camps and excursions, transitioning to high school, friendship development, friendship breakdown, exams, the highs, the lows and everything in between. Thirdly, to the staff. All their wonderful, caring teachers that had an impact and or influence from their  primary school teachers to our amazing teaching and wellbeing staff at Mount View. A huge thank you to Ms Ainslie Martin for supporting them as their Year Adviser, Mrs Julie Myers (retired) Head Teacher Wellbeing and Mr Shane Hookway (DP).

As their schooling officially comes to an end, Year 12 have been having some celebratory days at school. In week 7 they surprised the school body by coming dressed in book week costumes and held a highly successful fundraising BBQ. The video can be viewed on the Mount View High School Facebook page.

HSC Examinations

HSC exams will be held at East Cessnock Bowling Club. A reminder that these are conducted by NESA, not the school and as such students need to abide by the rules and regulations stipulated by NESA such as acceptable equipment, being at the exam 10 minutes prior to the start time, exam etiquette and appeals. NESA has released information specific to COVID and HSC examinations which has been emailed to students and parents in week 9.

As a summary;

The key messages for students and exam staff remain:

  • Stay home if you are unwell

  • Maintain personal hygiene measures

  • Staying up to date with vaccinations is encouraged

  • NESA’s illness and misadventure process is available for students who are unable to attend an exam. Find out what evidence is required

Illness/misadventure applications are for cases where an illness or misadventure occurs (see section 5.5)

  • occurs immediately before or during an HSC exam, which was beyond your control, and

  • prevented you from attending or diminished your exam performance.

STAYING HEALTHY LEADING UP TO AND THROUGHOUT HSC EXAMS

The Stay Healthy HSC hub has advice on staying healthy, active and connected during the HSC. Students can use the resources for studying, self-care and staying informed.

YEAR 8

As Term 3 comes to an end, Year 8 are in the middle of their final set of assessment tasks. I have had the pleasure of visiting classes and seeing the great work, dedication and effort being demonstrated by our amazing students. In science, students have completed a Depth Study whereby they hypothesize, design an experiment, measure, analyze and conclude scientific experiments on a range of topics from practical tasks such as the effectiveness of different densities of paper towel to absorb liquids to the impact of an individual's height on standing long jump results. There is a sustainability theme across their assessments too, whereby in geography they are justifying the sustainability of World Heritage Sites and in English they are considering sustainability by analyzing Tim Winton’s Blueback as well as other related texts. On return from the October holidays, assessments continue and I encourage students to use some of their break to complete any tasks to make the assessment period less stressful.

LITERACY FOCUS - Spelling, ideas and cohesion

The school is also heavily focusing on the following literacy skills: spelling, ideas and cohesion. Assessment tasks, other than exams, have these three skills as components of the task and we expect students to reference and utilise the marking criteria. Comments are provided on these skills to the students with their assessment mark and feedback.

ATTENDANCE AND UNIFORM

It has been a difficult year with COVID, influenza and general illness. That is why it is really important that students attend school every day that they are well.

Year 8, in Term 3, had an average attendance rate of 83%. We are aspiring to achieve 90% in Term 4. If you require any support or assistance with attendance please do not hesitate to reach out to the Year 8 Year Adviser, Ms Alecia Killen, HT Wellbeing Mr Benjamin Dibben or myself.

With the warmer weather approaching I’d like to remind all our students to be wearing full school uniform each and every day. The school has uniform assistance for students and their families. Please contact myself or any student can see me to discuss options. I am always happy to assist.

Thank you to all those students who are in uniform everyday. In Term 4 we will be recognising those students on a more regular basis with merits and commendations. A reminder that the following is NOT school uniform: tights or bike shorts (the school has at least 4 different short options available); wearing a jumper without a school shirt; black, red or multicoloured jumpers; jumpers with large logos such as Stashouse etc.

SNOW EXCURSION

In August, some very fortunate students in Years 7-11 attended the 2022 snow excursion to Perisher Valley. The excursion was a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in a unique experience.  Forty students and accompanying staff headed to the beautiful white slopes of Perisher and Blue Cow for two full days of intensive ski or snowboarding lessons to enable us to carve up the freshly fallen powder. Despite some high winds on day one, day two turned on a treat with solid snow falls all morning and then we had beautiful sunshine to spend the afternoon cruising the slopes. As always, our students were amazing. All the teachers were impressed with their effort, resilience and perseverance to acquire a difficult skill in such a short period of time.

It was also lovely, after years of COVID and restrictions on excursions, to be able to re-engage in these wonderful opportunities. The staff (myself, Mr Bragato, Ms Williams and Mr Dibben) would like to congratulate, commend and thank the students for their amazing behaviour and attitude demonstrated throughout the entire excursion. Whilst we won’t personally name and shame some of the more spectacular crashes  (Mr Bragato, Zac Morgan…😆) lots of fun was had falling over into pillowed snow, exploring runs, learning to ride T-Bars and chairlifts, as well as, the general experience of being a snow bunny (catching the ski tube, carrying bulky ski’s, losing one glove??). A video of our experiences can be viewed on the Mount View High School Facebook page.

The snow excursion is an annual event open to students in years 7-11 and typically runs mid August. Communication about the excursion begins early in Term 2 of each year.
