Time flies when you’re having fun! I can’t believe there is only 1 term remaining in 2023. We sure have packed a great deal of learning and enjoyment into our year so far…
Year 7 has been actively involved in the safe participation of Outdoor Education. Students have been working in small groups to make small fires in a controlled space. They have been developing key teamwork and camping skills of cooking. In theory, we have been examining how to navigate and stay safe on Social Media. Students are working towards creating a wellbeing app to encourage positive health choices among teens.
Year 9 - During practical lessons this term students will be participating in various types of invasion games such as soccer and basketball and striking games such as cricket and T-Ball. They will be formally assessed on their skill level, level of motivation and effort, and their teamwork within different activities throughout the term. During theory lessons, students are completing a unit on Sexual Healthwhere they will learn about safe sex practices and ways to prevent unwanted pregnancy and STI’s. They will be required to complete a test in class at the end of term to test their knowledge and understanding.
Year 10 - During practical lessons in Term 3, students have been participating in various aspects of dance including partner dancing (Cha Cha and the Samba), Individual dancing (TikTok), and group dancing (Just Dance). They will be assessed on their participation, movement skills and their ability to perform a dance sequence. Throughout theory lessons, students are studying the unit ‘Keeping Safe.’ in which they will be exposed to real life incidents that show the consequences of not being safe on the road – some of these may be confronting. This program includes: learning to drive and an overview of the rules; speeding and its consequences; distractions and how to be a safe passenger; drink driving and its severity; fatigue and a research task on the Laws and Consequences for different types of drivers (L, P1, P2 and Full Licence). This unit aims to provide students with information surrounding how to be a safe driver, the consequences of unsafe driving and equip students with a range of strategies to combat tricky situations. Through it students will learn necessary life skills they can use in the near future when they obtain their driver’s license. They will be required to complete their final assessment task for Year 10 in class at the end of term in the form of a topic test.
9 PASS Football have been studying Rugby League for the first half of this term. The focus has been on good ball sets and attacking structures. In the back half of the term our attention will shift to Futsal. Theory lessons were about coaching; primarily, what makes a good coach and a good session. Students will apply this knowledge in AT3 as they develop and coach a session for the class.
10 PASS Football have been training very well for the Hunter Rugby League Cup where they put on an impressive display, despite some key injuries leading into the tournament. The team unfortunately didn’t make it out of the group stage but every game was close and could have swung in MVHS favour. The focus from Rugby League shifts for the back half of the term as they study Futsal. Like Year 9, we have been studying coaching in theory lessons with a similar focus and assessment.
11PDHPE - This term, students have studied both options: First Aid and Fitness Choices. Emergency care, strapping, bandaging and managing other first aid injuries were involved in the First Aid unit of work. Fitness Choices explored the difference between exercise for physical activity and exercise for fitness as well as the different values people have on exercise, exercise settings and fitness as a commodity. Students are encouraged to ensure all revision is up to date in preparation for their Preliminary examinations. Revision includes syllabus palm cards, revision booklet and practicing extended response questions under time restrictions. Best wishes for your exams!
11CAFS - We have almost completed our final Core for Preliminary CAFS “Families and Communities”. Students have been learning about family structures, roles individuals adopt within families and communities managing change and socialisation. Students are encouraged to ensure revision is on track in preparation for their Prelim examinations. Revise course content, test syllabus palm cards and practice extended responses under time restrictions. Best wishes for your exams.
SLR - Students have been looking at the structure of sporting clubs and unpacking the key sports administration roles within clubs. Students will be utilising community links and leadership skills to interview local club committee members to develop their understanding of these key roles. In practical lessons, students have been engaging well across multiple indoor sports. They have been developing key sportsmanship, team and technical skills.
12PDHPE - We have completed course content and are very busy preparing for Trials and the HSC. Students have a revision pack including past papers, syllabus palm cards and mapping of past papers. They are encouraged to continue revising content, syllabus dot points and dashes and timing themselves to answer extended response questions they are unsure of. Best wishes for your exams. Study hard! You’re nearly there.
