As 2023 draws to a close, PDHPE would like to acknowledge the year that was…

●     We welcomed Cherie Tritton back to our faculty with open arms after 3 years leave.

●     Dom Fiorenza has been exceptional in his relieving roles for Damien Parish and Scott Bragato as they enjoyed their paternity leave

●     Kasey Cocking secured a permanent PDHPE teaching position at MVHS

●     Rachel Williams secured permanency with the Department

●     Lyndal Burke secured the permanent Head Teacher position of PDHPE

●     Our first year of running the stage based sports model proved successful in increasing student engagement and attendance

●     Lots of sporting success from swimming, athletics, and cross country to netball, touch football, futsal, soccer and rugby league

Year 7

In the lead up to swim school, students have been learning about water and sun safety in theory lessons including emergency care. Practical lessons have focused on conventional games.

Year 8

Year 8 are currently exploring the important area of nutrition as they continue on their path to optimal health and wellbeing. Content areas include essential nutrients, energy values, sugar consumption, food labels, health star ratings and advertisements. Practical assessments are being finalised with the inclusion of a new peer review activity. Students took on the role of the assessor and completed a peer based assessment of skill and participation levels during a variety of court games. This task encouraged students to engage with the marking criteria which is often undervalued as a form of self reflection and improvement during the completion of tasks.

Year 9

Students have been playing a range of conventional games such as touch football, soccer, netball and basketball. They will continue to develop skills in these conventional games throughout the remainder of Term 4. In theory lessons, students have started a unit called #Respect in which they identify and understand positive qualities essential for fostering healthy and fulfilling relationships as well as identifying common negative signs such as control, manipulation, and disrespect.

9 & 10 PASS

Students have been learning how to play emerging world sports, including Gaelic football, Kabaati & Pickleball. In theory they have been examining the promotion of active lifestyles to improve health throughout life.

9 & 10 PASS Football

PASS Football students have been studying leisure activities this term. The students have been gaining a deep understanding of these and their contributions to a well-rounded and healthy lifestyle. The theoretical unit on leisure activities aims to educate the students on the benefits of hobbies and recreational pursuits. It covers topics like time management, stress relief, and the importance of relaxation in achieving peak performance on the field. In addition to the theoretical unit, PASS Football has been diligently working on enhancing its Rugby League skills in practical classes this term. Within the Rugby League unit, the PASS Football class have been honing their tackling, passing, and teamwork skills.

Year 10

During Term 4, Year 10 students started to complete their Stage 5 schooling as they look towards Stage 6 and/or employment. During theory lessons, they have been studying Living Life In Your Active Wear where students learn all about the various benefits physical activity has not only short term but also the long term benefits as well. Throughout this unit, students are also exposed to the types and principles of training to assist them in understanding specific routines. During practical lessons, students are looking at fitness, where they will be conducting a range of tests and will be able to see where they sit against the norms for people of their age. We wish Year 10 all the best as they progress into their senior schooling years.

11SLR

Students have been introduced to their first topic for Year 12 SLR, Healthy Lifestyle in which they will develop anunderstanding of  sub-topics of Nature of Lifestyle, Physical Activity, Drug Use, Nutrition and Health Issues of young People. During practical lessons, they will be working towards their first assessment task that is a practical application towards the unit of Net Games whereby, as the name suggestes, students will be exposed to a range of games including: Volleyball, Badminton and Table Tennis.

11CAFS

Students have been introduced to their first HSC Core: Resource Management and the mammoth task of completing an Independent Research Project for their first assessment task. The IRP is due week 10 of this term and students have been busily preparing their hypothesis, methods of research, sample groups, literature reviews and recording their progressions in their journal. Class time has been allocated to work on this however students will also need to conduct their research independently.

11PDHPE

Sports Medicine is the first Option studied in HSC PDHPE. Students have been learning about the classification and management of sports injuries, specific demands of athletes, the role preventative actions play in enhancing the wellbeing of athletes and rehabilitation procedures. The first assessment task requires students to study a chosen sport in detail, referring specifically to sports policy and the sports environment as well as completing an extended response in class re: the demands of specific athletes.

SPORT:

Rugby League

Mount View Grapes Rugby League Team have been busy in Term 4 preparing for the  13’s 14’s 15’s 16’s Boys and 14’s and 16’s Girls NRL Rugby League 9’s competition.

13’s Boys played great football on the day winning 2 of 3 games in the group stage, the team played with great spirit and determination, while finishing the day with only 8 players due to injury. Liam Wright was voted Player of the Day by the team, while captain Sabe Niven also had standout performances. 

15’s Boys began the competition in a tough pool and while outscoring the opposition 3 tries to 2 in the first game, the team went down by 1 point which meant they could not qualify for the semi finals. The team then rallied for their final game blasting our opponents off the park with a 28-8 win. Jack Harris was voted Player of the Day by his team and Jackson Taranto was awarded the coaches award for his tireless effort in the middle. 

Opens Basketball

The Opens Boys and Girls Basketball teams traveled to Maitland Basketball Arena to take part in the Coalfields Basketball competition. The Opens girls played some fantastic basketball on the day, being crowned the champions of the Coalfields. Through this great performance, 6 girls (Matilda Death, Tayah Koeford, Madi Fairlie, Tahni Beckett, Jasmine Kerr and Charlotte Moore) were selected in the Coalfields Representative team. The boys also played with fantastic grit and determination in all 5 games on the day. Kade Logue was voted player of the day by the team. Congratulations to all students who participated on the day. 

Stage 4 Lifesaving program

During term 4 Year 7 and 8 students will engage in a 5 day lifesaving and aquatic program that addresses the stage 4 syllabus  outcomes and objectives - participate in a range of swimming activities and rescue skills, eg stroke correction, timed tows, clothed rescue, games and sports. Students will work through a structured lifesaving program on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at Cessnock pool and at Branxton pool on Wednesday. Participating students will be offered a reward outing to Merewether beach and baths on Friday where they will learn about beach / surf safety and engage in a variety of sand activities. An optional swim in the ocean baths will also be provided.

The COST of the program is $35.

Students WITH a pool season pass or fitness passport only need to pay $19.

Please note that all students were invoiced for this program from the start of the year. Any payments made can be confirmed via your school bytes portal or by contacting the school office. It will appear on the students invoice as 'lifesaving program'.

Payments can be made through the school bytes portal or via cash / EFTPOS at the front office.

Touch Football

The Opens Girls and Boys competed in the Coalfields Touch Football Gala, both teams played some great football on the day. The Opens Girls team went through the day undefeated and will progress to the Hunter Region Finals early next year. The Open Boys team had 2 narrow losses but ended the day with a victory. Congratulations to all players involved on another great day representing the school. 

Opens Netball

The Opens Netball team are yet again the Champions of Coalfields. The girls played fantastic Netball on the day, winning all four of their games.  Congratulations to all players involved on another great day representing the school.
