Creative and Performing Arts

Year 11 Preliminary Visual Art

The newly installed Learning Displays have brought another level of fun to the classroom as students investigate and learn about one of the core areas of content - the Frames.

Students were exploring the use of signs and symbols in artworks by Iranian Sherin Neshat.  They were able to gather their ideas as a group and apply meaning in written response of their own.

“Working as an Artist” workshop and exhibition visit

At the start of Term 2, our Senior Visual Art students participated in a Case Study and workshop based on the theme of 'Working as an Artist'. Students examined the work of Dani Marti, an internationally acclaimed artist that lives and works in Cessnock. Destiny Forrest and ex Mount View High student began working with Dani Marti as an artist’s assistant whilst still at school and is now an artist in her own right.

Destiny met with our students and showed some of Dani’s work in progress, some of her own work and discussed ‘working as an artist’. Destiny told the students about what it is like to make work for another artist as an assistant and then to maintain your own unique style with your own works. She also discussed ways to earn a living and sustain yourself as an artist.

Students then went to Maitland Regional Art Gallery and met with the Senior Curator and Art Educator in the exhibition ‘Oh Canola!’ by Dani Marti. The gallery staff discussed their roles and explained how an exhibition is put together from idea to installation and the range of jobs and people that are involved in the process.

Students were then left to explore Dani Marti’s works and the rest of the gallery’s exhibitions. Some students participated in making their own work alongside practicing artists for the exhibition Dog Days.

7 Jolly

The class has thoroughly enjoyed using clay to explore the art elements: Shape and Form. They looked at Mexican Sugar Skulls for inspiration for their designs and learned how to smooth, press, carve and attach the clay to create different effects. It has been such a joy to see so many proud and happy little faces as they have been helping each other and working hard to achieve their best!!

Winter Art Workshops

Our Art staff have been helping keep the Winter Blues away by hosting the Winter Art workshops over weeks 5-8 of this term. Students have participated in Ceramics, Photography and Street Art activities during their break times.

Workshops will recommence in Term 3 and offer a cosy and creative retreat from the wintery conditions outside.

Thank you to the staff for volunteering their time and expertise.

Students in Year 7 have been working on a series of artworks in the unit of work 'Skull Crusher'.

The works are currently being curated and prepared for our exhibition next term.

The Art Gallery space will be open to the public after school hours during Education week (Term 3 Week 3) and open to the whole school to view works during Weeks 2-4.

We hope to see families and friends come and explore the many talents of our Year 7 students.

Music

In Year 8 Music this term we have been exploring Rock Music. Students have been performing various ‘rock n roll’ tunes on keyboard and guitar. Year 8 have been learning popular guitar riffs from 60s classic rock n roll all the way through to modern classics. All students have had the opportunity to explore the drum kit, learning a variety of rhythmic patterns. Over the course of this term year 8 have participated with a high level of enthusiasm and engagement through collaborative learning.
