Mathematics

NAPLAN 2021 has been completed once again this year, with results due later in the year. We are interested in looking at student performance particularly in response to the disruption to learning that occurred last year. Student growth and improvement is a key focus of the Mathematics faculty.

Students will have the opportunity to choose their subjects for 2022 and beyond shortly. The Mathematics faculty make choices for students based on their attainment for their core Maths classes in 7-10. We offer an elective year 10 course, called Foundations of Advanced Mathematics (FOAM) which aims to support high achieving students with a stronger foundation to engage with Advanced and Extension Mathematics in their senior years. For year 11 and 12 we offer Standard 1 which is a general mathematics course for Non-ATAR pathway students and Standard 2 which is the preferred ATAR pathway for most students. Advanced Mathematics is a specialist course for sciences and engineering students, with Extension 1 & 2 for those students who are eager for extra mathematical skills. NESA have released information about an upcoming Numeracy based senior course that will be available from 2022, however, we still don’t have information around syllabus, scope and sequence, assessment etc, so look for more information coming through students and classes as NESA release the remaining documents in Term 3. If possible, we will endeavour to offer this course.

Term 2 assessment is currently underway with reports due by the end of the term. The following shows the remaining assessment weeks and which courses have a task.

Week 6: Year 10 FOAM

Week 7: None

Week 8: Years 11 & 12

Week 9 : Year 11 Extension

Week 10: Year 7

There are still a number of students who regularly attend classes without scientific calculators, including during NAPLAN and assessment tasks. We have a limited number we can supply to students, however, they are an essential part of a Mathematics classroom and we recommend that students bring a scientific calculator every day.
