Creative and Performing Arts

Recess and Lunch

Over the term students who are interested in visual art have been invited to utilise the art rooms to strengthen their artistic skills and engage in artmaking activities during recess and lunch. Not only have students been honing their skills, but they've also been building friendships and a sense of camaraderie with their fellow young artists. The art rooms have become a vibrant hub where students collaborate, share ideas, and encourage one another in their creative pursuits.

8 Music Sapphire

The Year 8 enrichment class has been working hard as they create their very own instruments using recycled materials. Students are challenged to envision the musical potential hidden within everyday items, fostering a mindset of creativity and innovation. This exercise encourages them to think outside the box, exploring unconventional solutions and pushing the boundaries of traditional thinking. Additionally, students engage in iterative design processes, experimenting with different configurations and adjustments to optimise the sound and playability of their creations.

7ART

Year 7 art has been delving into the captivating world of Jean-Michel Basquiat, exploring his vibrant style and innovative techniques. Students explored Basquiat's use of colour, symbolism, and spontaneous mark-making.  Armed with brushes and markers students are working to create their very own “Basquiat”, experimenting with layering, collage, and bold gestures to emulate his iconic aesthetic. Through this process, students are not only gaining a deeper understanding of Basquiat's artistry but also building upon their technical skill, embracing spontaneity, and discovering the power of self-expression.

Senior Visual Arts

In Week 8, senior Visual Art students travelled to Sydney. Year 11 were attending ART EXPRESS 2024 at the Art Gallery of New South Wales with Mrs Willis - a showcase of exceptional bodies of work by 2023 candidates. Included was a HSC workshop where students who were selected for Art Express were discussing the trials and tribulations of being a Year 12 art student.

Year 11 were also treated to complimentary tickets to see the huge exhibition by French American artist ‘Louise Borgeois – Is the Day Taking Over the Night, or the Night Taking Over the Day’ exhibition which was publicised by the giant spider sculpture at the entrance of the South Building. It was a creepy experience standing under it, looking up at the egg sack! Underground and in the dark, the ‘night’ portion of the exhibition was excellent and worth a t-shirt, according to Victor.

Year 12 went to view 2024 BIENNALE OF SYDNEY – Ten Thousand Suns at White Bay Power Station with Ms Schafer. Included was an educational tour of the space where gallery educators delved into the artmaking practice behind select artworks, some of which had been changed and evolved from the original intention due to availability of materials, similar to what year 12 are experiencing with the development of their own HSC Body of Work.

Both year groups reconvened for lunch at Circular Quay where Mrs Willis was attacked by seagulls that attempted to steal her crepe, before everyone visited the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) at The Rocks for a look at another portion of the Biennale exhibit.

We felt like true tourists eating lunch under the train bridge out of the rain, and having pictures taken in front of the Carnival Splendor that was in port in Sydney Harbour, as well as the good ol’ Sydney Harbour Bridge.

ADFAS Scholarship Presentation March 25th 2024

Angus McGrath has been awarded the 2023-4 Australian Decorative Fine Arts Society Scholarship for his work in the Creative Arts. The scholarship is aimed at promoting the arts among young people in the Cessnock community and provides students from the local high schools an opportunity to develop their skills.

Angus’ application included work from Music, Visual Arts and Photography and Digital Media. A truly well rounded Creative Arts student.

After an extensive application process, Mount View High students were successful in wowing the judging panel and causing an unprecedented event.

For the first time, ADFAS decided to award more than one scholarship and some Highly Commended Awards.

Debra McGuigan, the Educational coordinator for Cessnock ADFAS said on the evening that through the judging process the panel had to convene more than once to view and discuss the applications. They found it very difficult to separate due to the very high quality of submissions.

Abbey Gardiner was awarded a minor scholarship and Nate Fennell and Rylan Staley received Highly Commended Awards.

We thank ADFAS for their commitment to the development of the arts and for supporting young creatives in our area and are so very proud of our students.

Thanks also to Mr Daniels and Ms Schafer for guiding the students through their HSC studies.
