Deputy Principal - Years 7 & 9

YEAR 7 CULTURAL IMMERSION DAY

I am thrilled to share some exciting news from our school's recent cultural immersion day. This remarkable cultural immersion day aimed to foster appreciation, acknowledgement and acceptance for Aboriginal and or Torress Strait Islander Aboriginal histories and culture provided our students with a deeper understanding of different perspectives of these cultures. It served as a reminder of the importance of embracing diversity and celebrating others from different backgrounds.

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from other year groups proved to be exceptional peer role models and leaders for the day’s events and activities. Thank you to them for their ongoing support and commitment to assisting with this event.

NAPLAN

Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN results have been delayed until mid-July. There have been significant changes to NAPLAN results, moving away from a single band achievement to reporting against a set of literacy and numeracy progressions.

The idea behind learning progressions is to provide more detailed and specific information about a student's progress in various aspects of literacy and numeracy skills. Rather than assigning students a single band score, the progressions would offer a more granular view of their abilities, showing the specific skills they have mastered and identifying areas where they may need further improvement.

YEAR 9

Next term, Year 9 students approach an important milestone in their academic journey. Subject selection plays a vital role in shaping their future pathways and academic interests. Our school is committed to providing comprehensive guidance and support during this crucial phase.

To assist Year 9 students in making informed decisions about their subject choices, our school will be organizing an information session on July 25, 2023. This session will outline the range of subjects available, highlight the prerequisites and requirements, and provide students with an opportunity to ask questions and seek guidance from our experienced teaching staff.

We encourage parents and guardians to actively engage in discussions with their Year 9 students regarding their aspirations, interests, and long-term goals. This will enable them to make well-informed decisions when selecting their subjects and charting their educational journey.

STARSTRUCK

Our students took center stage with their mesmerizing performance at Starstruck 2023. Under the guidance of our dedicated staff (Rahni Dawes, Rachel Williams and Cherie Tritton), these talented students showcased their passion for the performing arts and left the audience spellbound.

The Starstruck Dancers, a group comprising of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students from various year levels, displayed incredible talent, coordination, and enthusiasm during their captivating performance. Their dedication and hard work were highly evident.

TRIAL HSC AND HSC

2023 Trial HSC Examination timetable was emailed to the students and parents in Term 2 Week 8. All examinations (apart from practical Visual Art and Music) will be held at East Cessnock Bowling Club.

The external HSC timetable has been released. Students can access their own individual timetable by logging in to NESA Students Online. In addition, important information about equipment lists, approved calculators and general advice can be found on the NESA website.

JAECG

We had our JAECG members represent Mount View High School at Cessnock City Council’s Elders' Morning Tea this term. Our Amarookoba Dancers performed a moving Indigenous rendition of You’re The Voice. Our JAECG president, Kaleb Floyd gave an excellent speech on the importance of using your voice to enact change and the powerful impact it can have.
