Youth Engagement Strategy: YES - TAFE Taster Programs

Twice a year, TAFE invites students in Years 10 - 12 to participate in their Youth Engagement Strategy Taster Programs. The aim of the YES programs is to give students an opportunity to try new skills, discover career opportunities, navigate a new environment, explore their potential, discover what they want to do after school and be on their way to becoming job ready.

Thank you to all students who registered their interest for the term 2 programs, registrations are now closed. TAFE will confirm student offers early next term and will offer further programs in term 4. If you have registered see below for basic details of each program. More detailed information will be provided prior to the start date of each program.

Youth Express - Work Studies

Earlier this term, Year 11 Work Studies participated in the Youth Express Employability Skills Program. Over four sessions, students were coached by mentors from Youth Express on how to become job ready. One of the sessions was a virtual reality session where students had the opportunity to explore a range of careers using VR technology. Youth Express mentors will be back in Term 2 to facilitate another four sessions on what it means to be job ready.

Youth Express - Work Placement Induction

All students enrolled in Year 11 Construction, Primary Industries, Retail and Hospitality must complete 70 hours of mandatory work placement and students enrolled in Metals and Engineering must complete a minimum of 35 hours mandatory work placement to be eligible for the HSC. Before students can register for and participate in work placement they must demonstrate that they are work ready by displaying that they have entry level skills, knowledge, aptitudes and abilities for the workplace environment. One activity that MVHS runs to support students becoming work ready is the Youth Express work placement induction. Students participate in 3 x 20 minute sessions that focus on personal presentation and how to dress appropriately for different working environments, how to reach out to host employers to organise insurance paperwork and basic do’s and don'ts while on work placement. Students enjoy these sessions and feel more confident leading into preparing for workplacement.

Students enrolled in Construction must also complete their Construction, Induction training - also known as White Card Training. This term HPOTS visited MVHS and delivered two training days. Any students enrolled in Construction who still need their White Card or any students in 10 - 12 interested in getting their White Card can register their interest with the Futures Center. If we get enough interest we will look to run another training day at MVHS or we will support students to complete the training at the HPOTS Campus. The cost of the training is $90.

Term 2 - Work Placement Dates

Year 11 Primary Industries - One day per week: Every Thursday starting the first Thursday of term

Year 12 Construction, Hospitality, Metals and Primary Industries - Week 3 and Week4

If you are scheduled to participate in work placement next term and haven't already, please make sure you contact your host employer in the holidays to organise your interview and signing of the student placement record.
