Creative and Performing Arts Faculty

So glad to be back!

There is nothing like the collaboration and banter that exists within the Creative and Performing Arts spaces. Whilst our students did amazing things during the ‘Learning at Home’ period, the work they are doing right now is even better.

Art making, music making and practising skills have been our priorities in all lessons since returning to full time school.

Everyone is very happy to have their hands on instruments, art materials and cameras again.

Also, we would like to remind our students about our high expectations when working in Creative and Performing Arts subjects. They are outlined on the Welcome to CaPA infographic.

Year 8 Music

The music students in Year 8 have been eagerly awaiting their turn to ‘rip it up’ and play some classic 70’s rock riffs. Featured here are students from 8MUK and 8MUW accompanied by Mrs Myers and Mrs Alder. Having returned from their ‘Learning From Home’ environment, Year 8 have been introduced to their guitar and ukulele during performance lessons. Three weeks on and there are plenty of ‘Angus Youngs’ amongst the band! Well done Year 8.

Year 8 Music Dioramas

This term, the Year 8 music cohort started an Independent Case Study during the “Learning From Home” phase. This Independent Case Study allows students to focus on a band, musician or solo artist of their choosing and complete various tasks that cater for all learning domains. One task delivered during the “Learning From Home” phase allowed students to extend their kinaesthetic skills, creating an environment reflective of their band or artist chosen. Students created various stage settings and live performance environments producing fabulous work. Below are a selection of some of the Dioramas.

Learning from home experiences

Amy-Sky Cruikshank - Year 9

This is a painting from my COVID-19 experience. It was actually inspired by COVID-19. Half OF this painting is a guy who I refer to as an extrovert and feels looked away while being quarantined and the other side being a female who is an introvert and feels at peace to be at home. I decided to change this up as I don’t usually paint or draw anything to do with people.

Charlotte Eminson – Year 9

Learning Art From Home

It was hard to get inspired in the same place that you’re meant to wind down. There was a lot of tension and irritation.

Katie Briggs - Year 9

Trying to do art during the Learning from home period was difficult because “my siblings stole my art book and decided to draw something and just ended up drawing scribble”. I drew during Coronavirus because I was bored, the Lisa screaming mom off of Homer Simpson’s, I got that idea of a rapper called lil peep and I got the idea for homer because he loves donuts so I decided to make Homer Simpson a donut head.

Shona Bush-Wells – Year 9

My experience doing art during COVID-19

During quarantine I didn’t do much art as I wasn’t extremely motivated to pick up my pencil and put it on paper, but when I did draw it was hard, my brain hit a wall. I feel like my art was lacking during quarantine which I am quite sad about. I was deprived from motivation, but I did do some doodles here and there. I'm hoping now quarantine is over that I can get back to doing more art. :-)

Welcome Ms Melamed!

Kerrie Melamed is a pre-service teacher completing her Master of Teaching (secondary) through Central Queensland University, who has been working closely with Drew Daniels in the music department for the last three weeks. She joined our school community on the same day as all the students returned to Mount View High, and has enjoyed working with several Year 8 classes as well as the Stage 5 and 6 elective music students. When not here, she works as a peripatetic instrumental music teacher in several schools in both Singleton and Maitland. She said she is sincerely grateful for the opportunity to have worked with the students at MVHS and most especially for the generous support she has had from all the staff during her short internship.

I really enjoyed the exhibition and found Basquiat and Keith Haring and their artworks very interesting. I liked the videos such as Keith painting himself into a corner. I thought Keith Haring was interesting how he drew with chalk in the subway and got arrested because it was graffiti. I thought it was sad how Basquiat died at 28 and Keith died at 32. Overall I enjoyed the exhibition and learning about the artists lives.

Tylah S

100 percent 10/10. I went into the tour thinking " oh I already know what she is gonna tell me" but in actuality I learnt so much from the tour. I am glad that I got to have the experience of learning about Basquait and Haring because I now know information about their art, their background and their techniques that I will continue to use in my art pieces.

Emily V

It was a great and very interesting way to learn, and you didn't even have to go there!

Blake S

I rate it a 7. I really enjoyed learning about the different artists and their artwork.

Ava V

10/10 Because though it is educational it is also fun to look at all the artworks that people have done and why they have done it. It is also cool to learn about the art backstory.
