Foundations of Advanced Maths (FOAM)

HPGE Focus – Intellectual Domain

This program supports students with high potential in mathematical reasoning and abstract thinking. It aims to deepen students’ understanding through complex problem solving, logical analysis, and the exploration of mathematical ideas beyond the core curriculum. Students develop intellectual stretch by applying their learning in new and flexible ways.

Entry to the FOAM Course

The FOAM elective is offered to Year 10 students who demonstrate strong interest and ability in mathematics. Entry is by self-selection with teacher recommendation. Students who show curiosity, persistence, and a readiness to engage in further challenge are encouraged to enrol as preparation for Stage 6 Advanced or Extension Mathematics.

Program Aim and Intent

The FOAM course is designed to develop and extend students who display high-level intellectual ability in mathematics. It aims to move students from potential, to high potential, and ultimately to high performance by providing opportunities to process complex ideas, reason through challenging problems, and apply their understanding in new and advanced contexts. Students engage in rich tasks that require investigation, logical reasoning, and creative thinking—deepening their conceptual understanding and enhancing their ability to transfer learning across mathematical situations. This strong intellectual foundation prepares students for senior study in Advanced or Extension Mathematics and supports long-term success in STEM and analytical fields.
