This program supports students who show high potential in mathematical reasoning, problem solving, and abstract thinking. It develops intellectual ability by encouraging students to process and apply complex concepts, make connections between ideas, and transfer their learning across contexts.
Entry to the Academic Mathematics Class
Mathematics classes at Mount View High School are streamed by ability in Years 7–10. The Academic Mathematics Class is the top mathematics class in each year group and includes students selected based on assessment results, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation. These students consistently demonstrate strong effort, self-motivation, and a readiness to engage with challenging content.
Purpose of the program
The Academic Mathematics Class is designed to extend students beyond the standard curriculum. Teaching is differentiated to increase depth, pace, and complexity, allowing students to develop higher-order thinking and advanced mathematical skills. Students engage in targeted instruction, problem-solving investigations, and collaborative tasks to nurture their talent and promote achievement in mathematics.
