Years 7 & 8 Academic Enrichment Class

HPGE Focus - Intellectual Domain

This program aims to develop student processing, understanding, reasoning, and the transfer of learning. Alongside its strong intellectual focus, the Academic Enrichment Class also nurtures students' creative thinking and social-emotional growth by encouraging imagination, originality, teamwork, and self-reflection.

Entry to the Academic Enrichment class

Students transitioning to MVHS into Year 7 apply by submitting an application, completing assessments in literacy, numeracy and general ability, and attending an interview. Primary teacher recommendations and test results also support the selection process. This is a two year program with class cohort reviews at Semester milestones to ensure students continue to meet program requirements and expectations.

Please note, being selected for the Academic Enrichment Class does not gain automatic entry to the Mathematics Enrichment Class. Mathematics classes in all years, including Yr 7 and 8 are formed separately based purely on mathematical ability.

Purpose of the program

The Academic Enrichment Class is designed for students who think and learn at a high level. These students often grasp new ideas quickly, see connections between concepts, apply their learning in new ways, and enjoy solving complex problems. They need more challenge and depth in their learning to stay engaged and continue growing.

Teachers adjust learning programs to extend these students and help them reach their full intellectual potential. This includes offering tasks that develop higher-order thinking, reasoning, and the ability to transfer learning across subjects.

Students also take part in enrichment opportunities such as Project EAGLE and a Learning Expo, where they showcase their skills through independent and group projects. They are encouraged to get involved in extra activities like debating, sport, and national competitions, which build confidence, creativity, and collaboration.
